8.2.11 Taichung Gaetway Park International Competition — PROJECTS

Located in the heart of Taichung City, Taiwan, the main goal of the project was the environmental recovery and remediation of the land formerly occupied by the old Taichung (Shuinan) Airport. Based on the 2007 Master Plan developed by the local Government, the project strives to become a “gateway” to the City, combining state of the art green technologies.

The proposal for Taichung Gateway Park integrates a sequence of public open spaces dedicated to environmental experimentation, recreation and comprehensive water management, in order to generate areas where nature and its processes blend with the City and its day to day activities.

The proposal involves a series of strategies that will operate simultaneously on several scales and along different subject areas. The idea is that the integration of said strategies will incorporate the land’s potential to provide environmental viable solutions to the inherent problems of the region.

Areas dedicated to urban sustainable agriculture, endemic and environmentally productive landscapes, multiple use corridors, and the design of a hydraulic infrastructure capable of responding when faced with critical rain scenarios, are some of the strategies behind the park’s proposal.

IÑAKI ECHEVERRIA is an architect and landscape urbanist based in Mexico City. His eponymous firm, founded in 2008, has been awarded numerous high profile commissions, both public and private such as El Parque Ecologico Lago de Texcoco (35,000 acres). Once completed it will become the world’s largest urban park. It involves over 150 specialists from multiple fields all directed by Echeverria’s office. The Papalote Verde Children´s Museum in Monterrey, scheduled to open to the public in winter 2012, will become Mexico’s first Platinum Leed certificate. A museum devoted to sustainability and environmental education, it has already become a cultural landmark in Mexico’s industrial heart. Echeverria’s multidisciplinary approach provides unique and specific solutions to complex conditions ranging from grand scale environmental remediation, public reclamation projects and landscapeurbanism planning to design, architecture and art installations. In these investigations a bottom-up collaborative approach to design is always privileged. Is working with the largest luxury retailer in Mexico and designing technological centers nationwide for a national employer’s association (coparmex). The practice’s scope includes international competitions and proposals such as the Taichung Gateway Park, the Pfeffeberg Underground in Berlin or a public space strategy for Ciudad Juarez. The office also takes on private commissions like the Tres Vidas House in Acapulco, Amapas Appartments in Puerto Vallarta or Sonora offices in hip-neighborhood Condesa. Iñaki Echeverria holds a Masters degree from the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation at Columbia University, a Professional degree from UNAM in Mexico and studies in Art History from UCBerkeley. He is a professor of design at Universidad Iberoamericana and director of the Berlin Summer Workshop at Aedes Network Campus Berlin. Echeverria is a visiting juror and lecturer in several universities in the United States such as Columbia, Sciarc, Upenn and Harvard.
